# New Restricted Area: Mediterranean Sea (MEDECA)

Starting **1 May 2025**, the **Mediterranean Sea** will be designated as an **Emission Control Area (ECA)** for **Sulphur Oxides (SOx)**. This regulation enforces **stricter limits on Sulphur emissions** from ships operating in the region to help reduce air pollution and improve environmental protection.&#x20;

To support this regulatory change, the **Mediterranean Sea (MEDECA)** has been added to the list of Restricted Areas in the system. This ensures that voyages through the region comply with the new regulations. *(See Figure 1 for reference)*
